Today we'll spend a good portion of the hour watching the film version. Please read ch. 11 over the weekend. We will discuss ch. 10-11 on Monday.
Have a great weekend! Today we will regroup to have conversations with some different classmates and share some fresh perspectives. With your new group, complete the following task. You only need one paper for your whole group, but please make sure to take turns recording answers:
When you are done, turn in your paper to the bin. Then you may continue working on your timeline and/or read ch. 10 for tomorrow. Today we'll start with a short quiz. Then you may move right into working on your timeline. We'll discuss last night's chapter together as a large group, using the term FOIL to articulate how some characters relate to others. We will also discuss NARRATOR RELIABILITY as it relates to Dede and the other sisters.
Please read ch. 10 (200-226) for Friday. Today we will begin with some literary terms for this unit. Throughout the week we will look at several examples we have found in the book--look for them as you read!
Use the reading from last night's chapter to answer the following questions:
We'll also discuss a few historical allusions in the text: 14th of June Movement, the Galindez assassination, and Fidel Castro's involvement in the struggle. Finally, we'll have some quiet work time. You may use your time to read the next chapter for tomorrow (pp. 171-199), OR to fill in your timeline. Keep up with the reading! One day this week you'll have an assessment over recent chapters. Today we'll get right back to work on our timelines. As you transfer your notes to your "final draft," be sure to add in events from the reading this weekend. We will keep adding to this timeline until we finish the book.
For tomorrow, please read ch. 8 (pp. 148-168). If you find yourself with extra time tonight, consider reading ahead for the week. Today we'll take some time to reflect on what we've read so far. You will be creating a timeline that does the following:
With the rest of our time together, you may read toward our goal page of 147. We will have a reading assessment next week. Today we will spend some time focusing on Patria. We'll review her first chapter beginning on p. 44. As we review her telling of her life story, what does she focus on? What details does she include, and what does she seem to leave out? What binary pairs can we see in her narration? How do these pairs impact our understanding of her character? What symbols come into play in this chapter?
Finally, we'll do close readings of 2 short passages in the chapter before you have the rest of the hour to read. Continue with the schedule posted yesterday. Plan on a reading assessment next week! I'm out today with sick kids. Here is your agenda. Please email me with any questions you may have.

Today we will begin by getting into new study groups. Then we will dive into discussion questions on the first 30 pages of the novel. Answer each question in your book, annotating as you work through each one. DON'T RUSH HERE! Focus on having rich conversations that might even extend beyond the questions provided. Make it your personal goal to contribute a thought, follow-up question, or quote from the text for each of the questions below:
We will read through chapter 5 for Wednesday (ends on p. 83). |
