Today we'll start with our reading time. Then we'll move into our 2-day task of "Breaking Down The Q3 Essay." We'll start off working as a large group, but we'll eventually break into small group and individual work. Be sure to read the directions carefully.
*Note: If you forgot to take the MCQ personal progress check last week, please do so tonight for homework! Senior Survey: Please take a few minutes to complete this survey for the counseling office. It will be used to identify potential scholarship applicants.
Note on choice reading: This will be the LAST week to read for the Q1 choice reading timed essay (next week Monday). Starting next week, we will have assigned reading from our novel In The Time of the Butterflies. Today we will work on a community art project for the Big Read. We'll also spend a little time considering the thematic ideas for this community-wide project. CARRYING THE STORY...
Reminder: Tomorrow is the LAST day to register for our AP exam!
If you were absent yesterday, please take the Unit 2 MCQ practice in AP Classroom. Today we will discuss our most recent assessments over "The Story of an Hour." Please take some notes on our discussion. As always, you will have a week to complete revisions and a revision memo (optional). Study your terms/poems/notes for tomorrow's poetry assessment! Today we'll take some time to complete the Unit 2 MCQ progress check on My AP Classroom. You will get a completion grade for finishing.
With the rest of the hour, we'll read. After reading, we'll do some review work for our assessment Friday using the poem "Them for English B." We'll work through the handout together and review our terms. We'll end with some writing practice together.
Exit card: Write three original sentences about any of the poems we've studied in this unit. For each sentence, pick a single device and describe how it contributes to the poem's meaning. AP EXAM REGISTRATION REMINDER: This is the week! You need to register for the exam by submitting your paperwork and payment to the West Counseling Office by this Friday (10/25). You must also go into AP Classroom and check the box indicating you plan to take the exam.
Today we'll start with our reading. Don't forget to set your new goal for the week! It's time to start thinking about that first choice reading timed essay. It is coming up in a couple of weeks. You will be able to choose from the choice reading titles that you've completed during this first quarter. Next we will continue our work in this poetry mini-unit. Our assessment will be this Friday (more details to come, but be sure to study your terms and your What-How-Why notes this week). Use this link to complete your literary terms definitions. I am out with a sick kiddo today. You will be completing a writing task for the poem we studied the other day: "Me up at does." If you need a copy, a quick Google search will lead you to it.
Read the poem again and consider all the different elements of structure function in the poem. Spend a few minutes brainstorming good theme statements with your group members. Then compose a robust paragraph that begins with the following sentence: In his poem "Me up at does," E.E. Cummings uses elements of structure to suggest [fill in with theme statement]. Your paragraph should include specific terms/techniques that relate to structure (syntax, stanzas, shift, etc.). It should also include quotations where appropriate. When you finish, please place it in the bin under the TV and use the rest of the hour to read. Today we'll flip our schedule and begin with a what-how-why collective analysis of "Picnic, Lightning" by Billy Collins. After tackling the "what" together, we'll have a relay race (with donut prizes) for the "hows." We will try to fit our reading in at the end of the hour.
Reminder: Rewrites and revision memos for your last assessment are due tomorrow. Scores will be averaged. This is completely optional. After reading today, I'll pass out the Literary Terms list for this unit. You may use the handout posted here to record definitions of some of the terms. We'll briefly discuss them and find examples in our "I am Offering this Poem" copies. Then we'll finish our what-how-why work with this poem and share out our theme statements for the poem.
