After your first reading:
- Identify the narrator and the situation between the story's two characters. Who are these characters, and how would you describe their relationship?
- What narrative techniques make this story unique? List or describe the techniques you see.
During the second reading:
- Put a star by words/phrases that are confusing to you.
- Underline the portions of the story you find most interesting or surprising.
After your second reading:
- How would you describe the narrator's primary concern(s) in the story?
- What inferences can we make about the setting of this story?
- How does the fact that these characters are nameless contribute to the story's meaning?
- Describe the impact of the STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS in the narration.
- Identify the TONE of the story (narrator's attitude toward the situation; her "tone of voice"). Use more than just one word to describe it.
- Categorize the narrator's instructions by topic--give examples for each category. What do these topics tell us about the narrator and the setting in which the story takes place?
